The Freedom Rock--A Memorial Day Tribute

by Judi Monday, Your Green Valley AZ Expert

The Freedom RockThere is a spot off the beaten path in rural Iowa where the true meaning of Memorial Day lives on in vibrant color.  While the paintings on the 56 ton, 12 ft granite boulder are truly a work of art, what is even more remarkable, is that the talented artist, Ray "Bubba" Sorenson II, was only 19 years old when he painted his first Memorial Day tribute.

Sorenson says he was inspired by the film "Saving Private Ryan", which he left feeling like patriotism was at an all time low and that too many of us had forgotten that Memorial Day is about the Veterans, not another three-day weekend.  Driving by that huge granite boulder he had the idea of delivering the message was that was burning a hole in his soul with a painting honoring the Veterans.

Up until Sorenson began painting his yearly memorial to Veterans, the rock had been known as Graffiti Rock, where many generations of kids had painted slogans, names and obscenities.  Incredibly, since this talented young artist laid claim to the rock it has been virtually left alone, its annual message too sacred to desecrate.

He created his first tribute in 1999 with a beautiful depiction of the flag raising at Iwo Jima that included the words "Thank You Veterans For Our Freedom".   This powerful reminder of what Memorial Day is really about captured the hearts of many.

Since then, every year around Memorial Day, Ray uses white paint to cover over his previous year's work and then spends a few weeks time creating new scenes on his blank canvas.  Now dubbed "The Freedom Rock", this famous Iowa landmark has featured Washington's crossing of the Delaware, the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in Washington, D.C. and America's response to the September 11 terrorist attacks.

People come from all over the United States and the world to visit The Freedom RockThe Freedom Rock.  However, it is much more than a well known painted rock.  For Veterans and their families it is a shrine to the brave people who have fought so valiantly for OUR freedom.

There are countless touching stories about the Freedom Rock including one about a family of a deceased Vietnam veteran who came to visit the rock carrying an urn with the ashes of their son.  They wanted to scatter the ashes around the rock but it was too windy.  So Ray who was painting at the time, put the ashes in the paint so they would be affixed there forever.

This Memorial Day I hope the story of this young man will touch you as deeply as it has me, and you'll take time from enjoying the three day weekend to pay tribute in some small way to our Veterans.

Mount Lemmon SkyCenter

by Judi Monday, Your Green Valley AZ Expert

Green Valley AZ Real EstateOne of the things I love most about living in the great Southwest are the night skies.  I never grow tired of watching as the sun melts across the sky in brilliant fiery colors before slipping silently behind the mountains so that a billion stars can come out to play.  There is something quite magical about living in a place where I can actually see the milky way.

If you are like me, you can't help but feel a fascination for the astronomical wonders that twinkle so brightly at night far beyond our reach.  To help you bring into focus the mysteries that lie in the deep dark sky, check out the Mount Lemmon SkyCenter.  It is an exceptional science learning facility located at the Steward Observatory's "sky island".

The SkyCenter builds upon the uniqueness of the 9,175 feet summit of Mount Lemmon and on the extensive knowledge base at the University of Arizona to deliver exceptional education adventures, including the popular SkyNights

SkyNights is a new public astronomy program that gives you a Mount Lemon SkyCenterbreathtaking view of the night sky.  This popular after dark program lets you experience the heavens as you never have before by taking advantage of the exclusive capabilities of the SkyCenter.

Plant A Garden Of Sustainable Daily Living

by Judi Monday, Your Green Valley AZ Expert

Plant A Garden of Sustainable Daily LivingI love gardening!   With my hands deep in the earth, creativity blooms effortlessly like flowers in the spring.  Gardening not only brings me peace of mind, but it is the place where I do my best thinking.  My garden rewards me in equal parts to what I put into it by brilliantly displaying the fruits of my labor.

Most important it is a daily reminder that we reap what we sow whether it is professionally, personally or through the time we spend in our garden.

I'm sure my affinity with my garden is the reason why the Judi Monday, CRS, Your Green Valley AZ Expertfollowing message, sent by a dear friend, resonated so deeply.   While I love the physical spaces I have created with flowers of all colors and plants of many species, its ability to inspire and change the world is limited, at best.

However a "soul garden" that is beautifully intentioned and tended to on a daily basis has the ability to touch and transform countless lives.  I invite you to join me in planting your own garden of sustainable daily living...together we can change not only our own lives but a multitude of others.

Unlikely Pairing Of A Hippo & Tortoise Teaches Us To Embrace Differences

by Judi Monday, Your Green Valley AZ Expert

Owen & Mzee--An Unlikely PairingOut of tragedy, joy triumphs and from chaos springs a most unlikely pairing of a century old tortoise and a baby hippo.  They met shortly after the tsunami waves struck the Kenyan coast on December 26, 2004 and have been inseparable ever since.

The hippopotamus's (nicknamed Owen) traumatic tale began when he was swept down the Sabaki River into the Indian Ocean and then forced back to shore when the tsnamic waves struck the Kenyan coast before wildlife rangers were able to rescue him on that fateful day.  Owen, less than a year old, lost his birth mother when the tsunami struck and found himself alone at a very tender age since Hippos are quite social and typically spend the first 4 years with their mother.

The Hippo & The TortoiseDestiny intervened when he landed on a 130 year old tortoise named Mzee.  Nature took over and Mzee became "Mom" to Owen who, according to ecologist Paula Kahumbu, began following her around exactly the way a hippo would follow his mother.  "If somebody approaches Mzee, Owen becomes aggressive as if protecting his biological mother", Kahumbu added.

Mom and son are teaching the world that while our differences are what makes each of us unique, they shouldn't be what keeps us apart.  Imagine how different our world would be if we would take to heart the story of Mzee and Owen by embracing what makes us different and walking the path together.

What Your Walls Are Saying To Buyers

by Judi Monday, Your Green Valley AZ Expert

You’ve put your Green Valley Arizona house on the market and inside are walls drenched in your favorite paint colors.  According to Debbie Zimmer, color expert at the Paint Quality Institute in Philadelphia, “paint color is so powerful that if can influence not just our state of mind but even our physiology”.

Curious what your walls are saying to your potential buyers?  They are definitely speaking volumes and here’s what they have to say (see italicized):

Judi Monday, CRS, Your Green Valley AZ ExpertRED:  Muy caliente…am I too hot for you to handle?  Give me a chance and I’ll put the zing back into your life by fueling your passion and desire.   Red will actually make the heart beat faster as it is the color of excitement and energy.  Remember a little red can go a LONG way.  According to Zimmer it is the perfect color for dining rooms and adult bedrooms.

PURPLE:  Would you feel differently about me if I told you that my royal presence increases your brain power?  According to Zimmer purple has a proven ability to stimulate brain activity.  Purple is one of those colors that should be used sparingly to avoid over-stimulation and, according to Zimmerman, it is a color that is probably most appropriate for a girl’s room.  In other words, if used throughout a home it could be too much of a good thing and won’t appeal to most buyers.

BLUE:  You look calmer already.  I’ll make you feel so comfortable that you’ll want to close your eyes as I use my considerable power to lull you to sleep. Blue has been shown to slow pulse rate and lower body temperature making it great for bedrooms.

Judi Monday, CRS, Your Green Valley AZ Expert

GREEN:  You obviously like what you see and the reason you do is because I have the remarkable ability to renew your spirit. By far one of the more popular colors (probably because of the way Spring makes us feel when the “green” returns to our environment,), Zimmer says green represents renewal, youth and vigor.

Yellow:  Yippee, I’ll keep you smiling Mr. & Mrs. Buyer.Green Valley AZ Real Estate  According to Zimmerman, yellow is a great interior color as it imparts happiness and optimism. Studies have shown that the brain actually releases more serotonin when the eye takes in yellow thereby creating positive psychological vibes.

Green Valley AZ Real EstateOrange:  Ta da, you can’t take your eyes off of me and what’s more, you love the extra bounce that I put into your step. More attention getting than yellow, orange has an energy and warmth.  The shade of orange is important because the vivid tones may appear raw and flamboyant while the muddy shades are useful in many rooms, says Zimmerman.

How can you make sure your walls are giving your Buyers the message you want?  Take a cue from the pros and use the color wheel when selecting paint colors.

And how about those non-colors?  Black can be a great accent color for it imparts elegance, formality and sophistication.  A little goes a long way and too much of it can be downright depressing so use it sparingly.

White, on the other hand, has a feeling of peace, simplicity and spaciousness.  It can provide a crisp finish to almost any paint job by adding sharp contrast to the wall color.  Best of all, it can give the illusion that the space it bigger than its physical dimensions…and when selling a home that is a very good attribute as “space sells”.
