Holiday Nights In Tohono Chul Park December 2 & 3, 2011

by Judi Monday, Your Green Valley AZ Expert

 Holiday Celebrations In Arizona

Savor the holiday magic of Tohono Chul Park on December 2 and 3 when 750,000 lights transform it into a winter wonderland that includes a special desert snowman.  This family event is a treasured Tucson tradition that shouldn't be missed.

Stroll the Park's paths with a glass of wine or hot cider while reveling in the lights, music and holiday cheer.  It's a perfect spot to do some holiday shopping and participate in the Park's Ornament Show

The annual ornament show represents a circle of giving that begins with regional artists who donate exquisitely unique hand-crafted ornaments and holiday decorations that are put on display and offered for sale to benefit the Park.  The funds raised through Holiday for the Park help to fulfill their mission to provide a unique place where people can enjoy the beauty of the Sonoran Desert and learn about its natural, artistic and cultural heritage.

Featured performers for this 2 night event include Way Out West, Gabriel Ayala and the Southern Arizona Women's Choir.

As one of the world’s 10 best botanical gardens (as rated by Travel + Leisure magazine) Tohono Chul Park enables visitors to immerse themselves in nature, art and culture through desert trails, themed gardens, vibrant art and cultural exhibits, eclectic shops and inspiring classes. Originally a family residence, for the past 25 years the Park has enriched the lives of Tucsonans and visitors by providing them the opportunity to find peace, inspiration and knowledge in this desert corner oasis.

Riordan Mansion State Historic Park

by Judi Monday, Your Green Valley AZ Expert

Arizona's Centennial Celebration

#8 of 100 Things To See & Do In Arizona

Riordan Mansion State Historic ParkStep back in time and experience a great example of Arts and Crafts style architecture at the Riodoran Mansion.  This expansive home, turned State Historic Park, boasts 40 rooms in its 13,000 square feet and is an impressive reminder of gracious living in a small territorial logging town.

Built in 1904 in picturesque Flagstaff, Arizona, the Mansion features a rustic exterior of log-slab siding, volcanic stone arches, and hand-split wooden shingles.  The Riordan residence was designed by the creator of Grand Canyon's El Tovar Hotel, Charles Whittlesey.  Inside the historic home is an impressive collection of Craftsman furnishings with appointments by Edison, Stickley, Ellis, and Steinway.

Reservations are encouraged as the size of the personally guided 45-minute interpretive tours of the house are limited and fill up fast.  Essentially this park is an historic house museum.  In fact, the Visitor Center was formerly the family's garage and has introductory interpretive exhibits on the history of the Riordan Family, including a video.

In addition to the guided tour there is a Self-Guided Walking Tour that shows the Mansion's exterior points of interest.

While the trip from Green Valley Arizona to Flagstaff is about 4 hours, with so much to see and do in the area not to mention places to stay that range from campgrounds to resorts, you'll want to plan on staying several days to enjoy everything this area has to offer.

Steve Jobs--One of "The Crazy Ones"

by Judi Monday, Your Green Valley AZ Expert

Hearing the news that Steve Jobs had died stopped me in my tracks.  Suddenly the world felt different and I can't help but wonder why the passing of someone I had never met would impact me so profoundly.

Yes, there is a connection as it was Steve Job's organization that gave my son, Jeffrey Monday, his first job (and only to date as he is still working there) in the business world.  He was the youngest person they had ever hired (just shortly before he graduated from UC Irvine)  as a Sales Executive.  Today he has risen through the ranks from calling on colleges and universities throughout Southern California to working with a prestigious group of Fortune 1000 companies.

I've watched my son grow into a man during his tenure at Apple.  In his home office is a collection of black and white pictures of the people that inspired Apple's "Think Different".   A legendary list of 17 iconic personalities:  Albert Einstein, Bob Dylan, Martin Luther King, Jr., Richard Branson, John Lennon (with Yoko Ono), Buckminster Fuller, Thomas Edison, Muhammad Ali, Ted Turner, Maria Callas, Mahatma Gandhi, Amelia Earhart, Alfred Hitchcock, Martha Graham, Jim Henson (with Kermit the Frog), Frank Lloyd Wright and Pablo Picasso.  Each one, a remarkable human being who marched to their own drummer and refused to conform, and by do so, changed the world.

Also featured on Jeffrey's wall is Job's ode to "The Crazy Ones":

Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes.

The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them.

About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They invent. They imagine. They heal. They explore. They create. They inspire. They push the human race forward.

Maybe they have to be crazy.

How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art? Or sit in silence and hear a song that’s never been written? Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels?

We make tools for these kinds of people.

While some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.   Apple Inc.

(This ad, Apple Steve Jobs The Crazy Ones, was never before aired and is narrated by Steve Jobs.)

I'm sure the next time I visit my son, there will be a new legend hanging on his wall, Steve Jobs.  A man who dared to be different in a world where PCs reign by standing at the "intersection of art and technology",  and creating elegant works of art instead of being just another manufacturer of tech products.

Thank goodness Steve was one of the crazy ones.  His genius, the likes of which will be impossible to match, changed not only the business industry, but the world.  His passing challenges us all to be equally courageous in our ambitions and inspires us to dream big and let nothing stop us in making them come true no matter how crazy or out of reach they may seem.
