Texture Makes Rooms Spring To Life
The physical feel of a room can be just as important as how it looks. But how many people make conscious decisions about the texture of the materials they use when designing an interior? Texture works on a number of levels, from creating comforting, evocative experiences or dampening noise to giving a room visual depth. Imagine these schemes with flat surfaces and you’ll see the important, yet often overlooked, effect of texture in design.

Your home should be your sanctuary, note the editors of House Beautiful Magazine. Walking through the door should be the first step in helping you shed the stress and activity of the day in favor of calm and peacefulness.

It isn’t always easy. But while you can’t abandon your household duties or dial down the family noise level, there are steps you can take to create a more soothing ambience and a relaxing space, however small, that you can call your own:

  • Conquer the clutter – Clutter produces physical and unconscious chaos. Get rid of old newspapers and other clutter before you leave home in the morning – and if there are children at home, put a plan in place to have them pick up toys and other clutter before you arrive home in the evening.
  • Choose the right colors – Color impacts us on emotional, physical and psychological levels. Begin to become aware of how different hues affect you before deciding what color to paint your walls.
  • Play up positive vibes – Notice the items in your home that bring a smile to your face; vacation photos, perhaps, or souvenirs that remind you of fun and uplifting times. Give them a prominent place in your décor to help boost your mood when you see them.
  • Go back to nature – No matter your décor, try to find a place for natural elements – pine cones, driftwood, seashells or whatever – that bring nature into your home and encourage a feeling of serenity.
  • Try plant power - Plants not only bring nature into your home, they help to clean and re-oxygenate the indoor air and lend an air of freshness and comfort.
  • Pick a spot – Put an armchair and reading light in your bedroom – or even in a corner of your tech zone. Wherever you put it, begin to regard it as your personal retreat. Close your eyes and count to ten every time you sit in it. You may find yourself able to relax with very little further effort.

How To Safely Prepare A Thanksgiving Meal

How To Safely Prepare A Thanksgiving MealThanksgiving and the beginning of the holiday season is just around the corner.  One of the most memorable moments at any holiday dinner is when the turkey is brought to the table. Make sure your holiday meal is a special one by following these simple tips for preparing your turkey safely.

  • Don’t unwrap a frozen turkey before thawing.
  • Thaw the turkey in the refrigerator for 24 hours per 5 pounds in weight. For example, a 20-pound bird takes four days to thaw. Thaw it faster by covering with cold water in the sink and changing the water every half hour per pound of turkey.
  • Refrigerate the turkey as soon as it has thawed or cook it immediately.
  •
  • Lay a tent of foil loosely over the turkey to prevent over-browning.
  • Never partially cook a turkey. Always cook it completely once started.
  • The turkey is done when the meat thermometer is 180°F and the stuffing is 165°F. If you don't have a meat thermometer, look for the red stem to go up on the pop-up timer. Press a thumb and forefinger into the thick part of the drumstick to see if it feels soft or wiggle a drumstick to see if it moves easily.
  • For easier carving, let the turkey stand at room temperature for at least 20 minutes.

Hot Home Color Trends For 2015 For Your #GreenValleyAZ Home

(BPT) – One of the fastest ways to give your #GreenValleyAZ home a facelift is with new paint colors.  It’s a strategy interior designers often use to create stunning rooms that wow the instant someone enters them: the use of creative color. Homeowners looking to deliver impressive interior style can take cues from what will be the trendiest hues of 2015 and beyond.

Homeowners can convey a variety of emotions in their favorite rooms by embracing different color palettes. From the sweet charm of pastels, to the comfortable ambience of neutral tones, to majestic deep and bright tones, 2015’s top color trends include:

Dreamy tones – Fantastical pigments like teal, charcoal and eggplant evoke a sense of wonder. Escape the everyday and recharge with dream-like shades in the master bedroom. Pair them with crisp white trim and opulent gold or zingy citrus accessories.

Frosted pastels – Soft blues and greys replace traditional pastels. For high contrast in the living room, combine these muted colors with striking accents, like ebony fireplace tiles or mauve window treatments.

Vibrant hues – Set the stage for lively conversation in the kitchen with energetic, attention-grabbing pure shades like red, blue, or orange. Balance brightness with grey on adjoining walls.

Nuanced neutrals
– Weathered, rustic colors, like pea green and copper, bring a dusty earth palette to a whole new level. Marry function and comfort in the guest bedroom with a mix of sandy beige and soft burgundy in the guest bedroom.

Sabino Canyon

by Judi Monday, Your Green Valley AZ Expert

The Spirit of Arizona Blog Series:                                     Sabino Canyon

Sabino Canyon In Tucson's Cordonado National ForestA place to go...away from it all.    A short ride and just minutes away from some of Tucson's best accommodations is a world far removed from the everyday.  Sabino Canyon, a natural desert oasis located in Tucson's Coronado National Forest is home to spectacular desert landscape and abundant wildlife.

You can experience the beauty of one of the most unique Southwestern desert canyons by embarking on the Sabino tram ride.  Trams arrive every 30 minutes for the narrated, educational 45 minute, 3.8 mile tour into the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains.  There are 9 stops along the tour offering picnic grounds located near Sabino Creek.

You may get off the shuttle at any of the tram stops and catch a later shuttle.  Be sure to bring your hiking boots and take the time to explore this special desert oasis on foot to get a true appreciation of its rugged beauty.

Steeped in breathtaking beauty, a day at Sabino Canyon offers something for everyone including a variety of trails for hiking that range from easy to challenging.   The main road, one of two routes on which Sabino Canyon Tours operates its Sabino Canyon tram tour, is mostly flat and paved so it can be easily navigated by visitors of all ages.  Asending from 2,800 to 3,300 feet, the main road crosses 9 stone bridges and is a favorite for both hikers and bicyclists.

Between the months of April through November, except July & August, you can see Sabino Canyon from a different perspective--at night!  Witness the animals who emerge from their daytime siestas to prowl the cool desert floor and see the moon illuminate the silhouettes of the stately Saguaro cacti.

Plan a day to escape to the spectacular beauty of Sabino Canyon and immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of nature.  You will be greeted by stunning vistas, fresh air, the tranquility of running creek water and a world of natural beauty.
