Desert Holiday At Madaras Gallery In Tucson AZ

by Judi Monday, Your Green Valley AZ Expert

Celebrate the joy of the holidays in a distinctly Southwest way at the Madaras Gallery in Tucson, AZ.   The "Desert Holiday Party" takes place every Monday until December 31, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  Revel in the the 12 foot Christmas Tree decorated with Madaras southwest ornaments as well as snow scenes and holiday paintings by widely recognized painter, Diana Madaras.

Diana's unique style makes her work easily recognizable. She is known as a colorist and celebrates the subtle, natural beauty of ordinary scenes in a way that is both intense and dramatic.  Don't miss out--join the Desert Holiday Party that features an extensive line of holiday gifts, including hand-carved, hand-painted desert animals that add to the festivities of the season.

Navajo National Monument In Arizona

Arizona's Centennial Celebration

#4 of 100 Things To See & Do In Arizona

Navajo National Monument

Navajo National Monument features three of the most intact cliff dwellings of the ancestral people (Hisatsinom).  The Navajo people who live here today call these ancient ones, Anasazi.  The dwellings are nestled in the cliffs high on the Shonto plateau, overlooking the Tsegi Canyon system in the Navajo Nation in Northern Arizona.

These ruins are villages left behind in 1300 by prehistoric pueblo Indians--the Kayenta Anazi.  Built and occupied for only 50 years, the ruins represent the final settlement farmers who adapted to the area's scarce rainfall to grow crops, build houses and raise families, then mysteriously moved on.

As you'll see by the video below, the half day round trip hike with a Ranger to this well preserved village from the 13th century is both scenic and educational.

The Navajo National Monument, located west of Kayenta, Arizona features a visitor center with a museum, two short self-guided mesa top trails. two small campgrounds and a picnic area.  Rangers guide visitors on free tours of the Keet Seel (Kitsʼiil) and Betatakin (Bitátʼahkin) cliff dwellings. The Inscription House site (Tsʼah Biiʼ Kin), further west, is currently closed to public access.

Before planning your visit to the monument, check here for operating hours and seasons.

Arizona's Centennial Celebration

by Judi Monday, Your Green Valley AZ Expert

Can you feel the centennial excitement building?  In 2012 Arizona will celebrate its 100 year statehood birthday and I decided the best way to celebrate this memorable event is with a special blog series focused on all things Arizona.

The centerpiece of the blog series will be 100 places to see and things to do around the state.  The hard part will be narrowing it down to just 100 since this amazing State of ours could be the world's 8th wonder with its diverse eco systems, array of natural wonders and the raw beauty of the Sonoran Desert all set in the splendor of the great Southwest.

My goal is to make it a collection of places that inspire, motivate, educate, thrill and delight.  As many of you know who follow my blog, I have shared a number of my favorite spots with you in my series titled "The Spirit Of Arizona", and some of those will be resurrected for this series.

I'd like each of YOU to be a part of what I hope to be an interactive series.  If  there something you want to see featured in this series, someone you know who personifies Arizona, or something you want to know about this great state of ours, share it with me and I'll turn your request into  a blog for this series.

To keep abreast of the many centennial celebrations that will  that will be taking place throughout Arizona bookmark www.Arizona100.org.   One of the countless events planned for this year is the Centennial Ride, with Arizona Native and Country Star, Diercks Bentley, named as the Honorary Chair.  Dierks' new single, "Home," has been chosen by the Arizona Centennial Commission to serve as the official song for the state's 100 year celebration.
