Green Valley Fine Art Network

by Judi Monday, Your Green Valley AZ Expert

The newly formed Green Valley Fine Arts Network has gone social with a Facebook page and its own website to showcase and sell its members' art rather than relying solely on the typical local art shows and social center venues.

This network is a collective of artists who are masters in producing gallery quality creations in a wide spectrum of media. Their showcase includes unique works in clay, jewelry, sculpture, Raku, oil paint, watercolors, woodworking, furniture, textiles, photography, and organics.  Click through their gallery of inspired masterpieces and you'll discover a treasure trove of one of a kind art pieces.

As creative as their works of art is the network's company name, Third Act LLC.  It is a metaphor for life as a 3-act play.   In the first part of life we start to know/discover who we are. The second act is what we do with our lives, how we spend our time.   Finally in the third act we begin to make sense of the whole.  We understand the meaning and significance of the "play" we've been living...in short, we finally get it!

Retirement allows us to journey from the necessity of making a living to pursuing personal passions and fulfilling creative yearnings.  In Green Valley, Arizona we have an unique environment that has led to many of our retirees wanting to leave a legacy to this world.

The Third Act is our "ah ha" moment.    Come and experience the joy of the members of the Green Valley Fine Art Network "ah ha" moments that are so magnificently captured in their artistic pursuits.

Phoenix ZooLights Is Making Spirits Merry & Bright 2012

by Judi Monday, Your Green Valley AZ Expert

 Holiday Celebrations In Arizona

Take a walk on the wild side through the Phoenix Zoo that has been transformed into Wildlife In Wild Lights.   This magical event features 3.5 million twinkling, dancing lights making it one of the largest holiday lights shows in the country.  You can enjoy this unique holiday celebration nightly from 6 p.m.-10 p.m until January 6, 2013.

ZooLights has are more than 600 glimmering light sculptures.  Although animal viewing is limited as most of the animals are sleeping, you will see zebra, otter, flamingos, watusi cattle and others in the animal kingdom that have more nocturnal habits.   As for the rest, you'll definitely see many of their likenesses lit up for your viewing enjoyment.

Don't miss the new MUSIC IN MOTION show in and around the lake - a dazzling light show like no other in the Valley! Music in Motion features "Wizards in Winter" by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, synchronized to 15, 000 lights including:

  • A dozen 12 foot tall floating light tubes
  • 26 dancing trees surrounding the lake
  • A 24 foot in diameter shimmering sphere
  • Six 3D giant butterflies that take flight around the lake
  • New full range sound system. Music in Motion can be viewed from several locations around the lake.

    More New Magical Moments:
  • Experience two 10 foot tall wizards creating an electric "snow" with a wave of their wands.
  • Follow the overhead threads of lights from a giant spider web that leads you to the hungry insect.
  • Take your picture in front of the 3D oryx, lion, or the new tiger.

ZooLights has gone green using LED (light-emitting diode) lights that consume far less energy than standard light bulbs.  They also require less energy to manufacture, thereby reducing their environmental impact even further.  The millions of lights are powered by SRP EarthWise Energy, a more environmentally friendly way to produce electricity. EarthWise Energy helps keep our Valley clean by producing energy from sun, wind, the earth’s heat and flowing water in our canals.

Jengo the giraffe is one of the animals that likes staying up late and can't wait to see his many friends enjoying Wildlife in Wild Lights.  Each ticket purchase for ZooLights helps the Phoenix Zoo fund their educational programs, conservation projects and feed the animals.

Canela Bistro In Sonoita Arizona

by Judi Monday, Your Green Valley AZ Expert

Arizona's Centennial Celebration

#7 of 100 Things To See & Do In Arizona

Canela Bistro in Sonita

Nestled in the grasslands and oak hills of Southeast Arizona in one of the small towns that dot the landscape is Canela Bistro.  Located within the Mountain Empire Region and Southeaster Arizona Wine Country in the quaint town of Sonoita, Arizona, it has quickly become a destination restaurant for locals and tourist alike.

Canela Bistro’s sun-drenched brick facade quickly gives way to the comfort and beauty found within. “The restaurant's ambiance just whispers of the Southwest...it has a comfortable, laid-back feel ” (Arizona Daily Star) Native plants, richly colored textiles, pottery and artwork are tastefully displayed throughout the restaurant. In addition to the cozy main dining room and the lush garden patio, a private dining room may be available upon request.

But the real story is in the food that is served.  Inspired by food archaeologist, Gary Nabhan, the owner of Canel Bistro, John Hall, left Seattle and returned to the place he grew up and opened Canela Bistro.  Hall and his partner, Joy Vargo, committed themselves to using locally sourced ingredients when they opened in 2005. Vargo said Nabhan taught the couple how to forage for prickly-pear fruit, mesquite beans and yucca flour.

Take the scenic drive to Sonoita and enjoy Southwestern cuisine created from locally produced food and wine that is guaranteed to please even the most discriminating taste buds.  Canela Bistro’s Menus are also Food-Allergy, Vegetarian, Vegan and Kid Friendly.  Whether you’re just treating yourself to a great meal or celebrating a special occasion, the owners and staff at Canela Bistro know exactly how to make your experience a memorable one.

 Holiday Celebrations In Arizona

Savor the holiday magic of Tohono Chul Park on December 2 and 3 when 750,000 lights transform it into a winter wonderland that includes a special desert snowman.  This family event is a treasured Tucson tradition that shouldn't be missed.

Stroll the Park's paths with a glass of wine or hot cider while reveling in the lights, music and holiday cheer.  It's a perfect spot to do some holiday shopping and participate in the Park's Ornament Show

The annual ornament show represents a circle of giving that begins with regional artists who donate exquisitely unique hand-crafted ornaments and holiday decorations that are put on display and offered for sale to benefit the Park.  The funds raised through Holiday for the Park help to fulfill their mission to provide a unique place where people can enjoy the beauty of the Sonoran Desert and learn about its natural, artistic and cultural heritage.

Featured performers for this 2 night event include Way Out West, Gabriel Ayala and the Southern Arizona Women's Choir.

As one of the world’s 10 best botanical gardens (as rated by Travel + Leisure magazine) Tohono Chul Park enables visitors to immerse themselves in nature, art and culture through desert trails, themed gardens, vibrant art and cultural exhibits, eclectic shops and inspiring classes. Originally a family residence, for the past 25 years the Park has enriched the lives of Tucsonans and visitors by providing them the opportunity to find peace, inspiration and knowledge in this desert corner oasis.

Mount Lemmon SkyCenter

by Judi Monday, Your Green Valley AZ Expert

Green Valley AZ Real EstateOne of the things I love most about living in the great Southwest are the night skies.  I never grow tired of watching as the sun melts across the sky in brilliant fiery colors before slipping silently behind the mountains so that a billion stars can come out to play.  There is something quite magical about living in a place where I can actually see the milky way.

If you are like me, you can't help but feel a fascination for the astronomical wonders that twinkle so brightly at night far beyond our reach.  To help you bring into focus the mysteries that lie in the deep dark sky, check out the Mount Lemmon SkyCenter.  It is an exceptional science learning facility located at the Steward Observatory's "sky island".

The SkyCenter builds upon the uniqueness of the 9,175 feet summit of Mount Lemmon and on the extensive knowledge base at the University of Arizona to deliver exceptional education adventures, including the popular SkyNights

SkyNights is a new public astronomy program that gives you a Mount Lemon SkyCenterbreathtaking view of the night sky.  This popular after dark program lets you experience the heavens as you never have before by taking advantage of the exclusive capabilities of the SkyCenter.

During the 5 hour program you will have the opportunity to: learn the constellations, observe interesting atmospheric phenomena, and view the wonders of the cosmos from a high-quality astronomical site using an outstanding new 32-inch Schulman Telescope…Arizona’s largest dedicated public viewing telescope!

Old Tucson Studios

by Judi Monday, Your Green Valley AZ Expert

Known as Arizona's Hollywood in the Desert, Old Tucson Studios was voted "Best Western Movie Set" by True West magazine, and is listed among five one-of-a-kind Tucson sites by USA Today.  The site for more than 300 film and television projects since 1939, it is one of the most active filming locations for Western-themed movies, television, cable shows and commercials in the United States.

Arizona Filmed At Old Tucson StudiosOld Tucson Studios came to life in 1939 when Columbia Pictures chose a Pima County-owned property on which to build a replica of 1860's Tucson the movie Arizona.  The $2.5 million film, starring William Holden and Jean Arthur, set a new standard of realism for Hollywood westerns, initiating the move away from studio backdrop movies to outdoor epics.

More than 50 buildings were erected from scratch in 40 days by local technicians and carpenters.  Descendants of the Tohono O’odham, Arizona’s first inhabitants formerly known as the Papago, assisted in the set production. Without the convenience of running water, they made more than 350,000 adobe bricks from the desert dirt to create authentic structures for the film. Many of those structures still stand today.

After the filming of Arizona, Old Tucson Studios lay dormant baking under the desert sun.  The studio was revived briefly for the film The Bells of St. Mary’s (1945), starring Bing Crosby and Ingrid Bergman. Hollywood then began taking notice of Old Tucson Studios, and it became a favorite filming location.

Passing through the gates of this old frontier town, visitors from around the globe are transported back to a time when fearless men with six shooters ruled the Old West. Saunter down the streets of Hollywood's most famous movies; walk in the footsteps of movie legends like John Wayne, Clint Eastwood and hundreds more.

There is something for everyone to do in this legendary town.  From cowboy gunfights and daring stunts to rip-roarin’ musical revues and comedies, Old Tucson Studios offers exciting Old West entertainment. Take a guided tour of this historic Tucson attraction and you’ll be amazed by its rich film history. You can get all gussied up in some old-fashioned duds for an old-time photo or take a miniature train ride into the beautiful desert surrounding the park.

Garden Of Gethsemane Tucson, AZ

by Judi Monday, Your Green Valley AZ Expert

The Spirit of Arizona Blog Series:                                     Garden Of Gethsemane In Tucson, AZ

It seems fitting, with the holiday season upon us, to focus this installment of the Spirit of Arizona on what can only be described as a spiritual oasis in the midst of bustling Tucson Arizona.  Situated on the West bank of the Santa Cruz River across from the central business district and interstate, this serene site has provided a peaceful respite from the growing city surrounding it for over half a century.

Walled off from the noise and filled with lush plants and trees, this unique garden has an immediate calming effect on its visitors.  The name, Garden of Gethsemane refers to the garden where Jesus prayed before being arrested and crucified.  Dominating this peaceful spot are life size concrete statues of Christ, his Apostles and his mother and father.  Maintained and supported by a partnership between the Catholic Knights of Columbus and the City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department, the park is a gift to God from a grateful artist.

Felix Lucero, a Native American from Trinidad, Colorado was drafted into the army and sent off to the trenches of France to fight in World War I.  Following a bloody battle, Felix found himself laying among the dead and near-dead who had been abandoned and left to die on the now silent battle ground.  Critically injured, and very much alone and scared, he prayed to God for life, promising that in return he would devote his life to building statues of Christ wherever he went in his life.

His prayer was answered and true to that promise he made to God in exchange for his life, he returned home and with no formal training in art, devoted his life to creating sculptures of Christ.  His figures speak to those who seek refuge in this garden of the love and unshakable bond that Lucero felt with God.   It has became a shrine where people from all over came to pray and meditate.

All the more remarkable, when you consider that the artist was living under the Congress Street Bridge in a cardboard and plywood shack when he began sculpting the Christian statues.  They were originally molded from damp sand, reinforced with debris recovered from the Santa Cruz riverbed, and covered with plaster.  According to a plaque in the garden, "heartbreak and pain walked with the artist during his sacred efforts."

Today, the secret it out, and while the faithful still come to pray, it has also become a popular spot for weddings and quinceaneras.  Despite its fame, there remains an abiding spiritual feeling that envelopes visitors as they enter.  Open daily from dawn to dusk, there is no charge to visit this serene space located at 602 W Congress Street.  Felix Lucero died in 1951, but his beautiful legacy and monument of one man's fulfilled promise to God lives on in the heart of Tucson.
